If your family is expecting a new baby for the first time, you probably have questions about maternity and parental leave. In Canada, there are some differences from province to province, but here's what you need to know.
Maternity leave gives mothers time off work following the birth of their children. In most provinces it is 17 weeks, except for Alberta (15 weeks) and Quebec and Saskatchewan (18 weeks). After maternity leave, a woman is generally entitled to return to her previous job (or an equivalent one), and to receive the same salary and benefits she did before she left. In most provinces (British Columbia, New Brunswick and Quebec are the exceptions) a woman must have been working for her employer for a certain amount of time before becoming eligible for maternity leave.
Maternity leave doesn't have to start after the baby is born. It can begin before the expected due date. In some provinces, it can begin up to 16 or 17 weeks before the due date.
